It seems the Chavez the world favourite socialist man of the
people wants to rule by decree for a year. I guess if it does not work after a year people can vote to change it. Oh wait! So do people still think he is a democrat. Do the people who think he is a man of the people still defend him. I guess being a man of the people he already knows what they want. So he does not have to bother with democracy.

Democracy seems to be ignored even closer to home. Despite a postal referendum among the people of Dingle which by a majority of 91.7% rejected the proposed name change of the town to An Daingean, the County Council is progresing with changing road signs to An Daingean nevertheless.
Affronts like this to the wishes of the people are blatant assaults on democracy on our own door step.
so the name change of dingle is equal to ruling by decree?
No that wasn't the thrust of my comment, it was just an example of elected officials ignoring the clearly stated wishes of the people here in democratic Ireland.
Viva Chavez!
Give me a socialist like Chavez over a facist like McDowell any day.
Be careful what you wish for Anonymous, fascism and socialism are but two sides of the same worn-out coin.
Doesn't George Bush rule with similar powers called executive orders? Isn't that how he is going to send extra troops into Iraq against the wishes of the democraticaly elected democratic majority in the US Senate and Congress?
Correct me if I am wrong but a presidental order has to be agreed by the senate but the pres can then veto it. But a 2/3 majority in the senate overrides a presidential veto. And I think the supmere court can also stop it. As they have done one 2 previous occasions
And what about the result of the First Nice Referendum here, where a majority of those who voted rejected the treaty, yet because the Government didn't like the result they reran the referendum with the excuse that not enough people had voted or some such bullshit. What about that for an example of "democracy"?
