Where do you stand on the EU?
I have a sneaking suspicion that the real purpopse of the EU is to provide the French with a means of finally conquering the world. Honestly though, the original idea of a common market is one which I wholeheartedly support. Anything beyond that I am unconfortable with. The EU appears to be in an awful hurry to expand i.e Turkey, which in my opinion is dangerous. Its about a week since ten new Countries joined the party. After the last week, is it really all that wise to already be talking about a country with 70,000,000 approx Muslims joining too?
Did you support the invasion of Afghanistan? Yes. Did you support the invasion of Iraq? Yes Do you continue to support either or both of those conflicts? Yes to Afghanistan. Yes and No to Iraq. I said at the time that if there was no WMDs found then going into Iraq would not be justified, and I stand by that. There are bigger threats than Saddam. Nonetheless, I believe Iraq and the Middle East will ultimately be a better place when all this is said and done. Now that the U.S are in there, I don't subscribe to the notion that they should cut their losses and get out at the soonest opportunity, regardless of the mess they leave in their wake. Where do you stand on the EU? I believe Ireland still needs to be fully engaged in the EU as it now exists because it allows us to influence economic policy on the continent and provides a counterweight to Britain, by which we would otherwise be over-influenced economically and culturally.

I participated in development of housing policy for the Green Party nationaly, and stood for them as a local election candidate in 2004 in my home town, being eliminated from the running for the final seat on the ninth or tenth count just one vote behind the Sinn Féin candidate. Fianna Fáil ultimately won the seat.

Where do you stand on the EU?
Its ideals have been lost to political expediency and bureaucracy, the one document that sought to set out a vision, the Constitutional Treaty seems lost to a detached public, how can we offer a place to any new accesion country, particularly a country of 90 million Muslims, when its founders are not sure of the way it wants to evolve.
Did you support the invasion of Afghanistan?
I cannot condone violence, even a policy of a proportional response. The end result has been the end of the rule of the Taliban regime and a better quality of life for its citizens. A response was essential however Al Qaeda is a group with no state and no ties, it is as much a creature of Pakistan as Afghanistan and its members are based worldwide. Attacking Afghanistan cannot claim to have been a solution and represented ultimately more blood and more war.

I remember seeing a picture on the fromt of the New York Times of a young boy attending one of the first cinema shows to be held in Iraq and reading the same day that there will never be any way of knowing how many Iraq civilians died following the invasion. I believe 9/11 is entrenched in our mindset as a heartless loss of American life and the invasion of Iraq is portrayed as a strategic move in the 'War on Terror', the only face of the war of that is Saddam Hussein, we have no idea of the suffering endured by the people of no amount of voting ballots will assuage me as to the injustice and questionable motives of this incursion.
